History of Sorrento: Foundation, Colonization, and Lemon Groves

Sorrento, one of Italy's most charming towns, traces its origins back to the Greco-Roman period. Founded around the 7th century BC, the town was colonized by the Greeks and later by the Romans, who turned it into an important commercial and residential center. During the Middle Ages, it suffered invasions by the Lombards and Saracens, eventually being incorporated into the Duchy of Naples.

The name "Sorrento" derives from the Latin "Surrentum", and its etymology is connected to the myth of the sirens who, according to legend, lived in the waters surrounding the coast. Lemon groves, one of the town's trademarks, have their roots in the Arab era when citrus cultivation was introduced to the region. Since then, Sorrento's lemons, renowned for their unique aroma, have become local icons.
